The Miner 03:20
The dust hung like curtains, And fell to the ground And I was never one to be fond of this town But I’ll suffer the evenings, For the break of the day In so faithful a story as though written in page It was sombre the morning, sweet was the air, I was bathing in your bright arms But the thought of this hole was to tear my heart in two In here I’m just one of the masses, Just another lost soul Who pays for in blood, what’s given in gold Morning to evening, bent to the rock Break through wall to find wall again And each handful of rubble a day I’ll never know Now there’s never a word on these blackened lips Like there never was gold in the mine Just the empty old rhythm that begs for solitude Go on ravage the earth like some blessed kiss, Go on rid them of all their disease And I’ll wait, in the morning, for you So I took it upon me To bury the beast Fire in my belly, slow match in the teeth And I buried my ballast a mile underground, Now I’m bathing in your arms again But this cold-blooded devil has turned his cuff on me As this rope burns the skin on the back of my neck In some glorious irony I guess the empty old rhythm has found its solitude Perhaps this brief taste was too rich for the tongue Now I’m bound to go back underground But I’ll wake, in the morning, to you

Hand me gold, hand me silver and I’ll spill it all out; I’ll cast it away Spend the most on the women and the rest on the jack of spades And I’ll be back around in the month of May There was a woman once, she held me like a heavy rain Like every man needs a cradle, every woman needs a heart to mend Yes I knew love once, but I’ll never know love again She stole my heart like some sea-bound bird And I’ll spend all of this God-damned money ‘till it no longer hurts Cos she’s my ocean, yes she’s my lover I’ll follow her horizons farther and farther And drop my anchor when this old debt is through And I’ll flog that dead horse, ride these endless latitudes. I never was one for water, my colour turns, my stomach tips But she stood firm on her sea legs, she whispered through her sea lips And I’ll dive deep into that ocean cos her smile could launch a thousand ships Throw myself at these sails like the wind and the rain And every new voyage another link in this ball and chain Cos she’s my ocean, yes she’s my lover I’ll follow her horizons further and further And drop my anchor when this old debt is through And I’ll flog that dead horse, try my best not to think of you.

There was a rain that lay this town I watched the water cut deep furrows in its wounded face It washed the coal out from the land, Washed the briefcase from our hands But this boat was sent to save Not to rock upon these careless waves There was a rain that lay this town Its still pouring down There was a path that cut these hills It thread rambling needle through the patchwork seams It led the sheep down to the water, Led the migrants to the border But these feet were made to climb Not to tread this long familiar line There was a path that cut these hills Its winding still There was a burden on these backs It lashed a load to the rythym of the whip as it cracked It sent the elders to their beds, Washed the hubris from of our heads But this wind was sent to cleanse Not to bend the knees of the lesser man There was a burden on these backs Oh lord to relax There was a fable in this land A young girl sculped mountains from the desert sands Waved the wind across the ocean with her mudded hand Poured her tears down on the sinners as they screwed up her plans But this bird was sent to sing Not to beat upon the wind with her tired wings There is a fable in this land Only some will understand

Jackson Hole 04:34
Beautiful curse You spilled blood, broke bone, to turn this earth It swallowed you in and blackened your skin And you fought to survive Fire in your belly, it burned bright in your eyes ‘Till you turned down your brow, to that opium ground And love laid you down in that old Jackson Hole Love laid you down in that old Jackson Hole I long to tread these steps Touch my hands on the tools that you left There’s rage in these winds, I fear a war to begin And my hands are full for now With touch of gun metal over saddle and plough There’s bad seed took hold of these precious young souls And love laid them down in that old Jackson Hole Love laid them down in that old Jackson Hole Lay me to rest I won’t plead, no I won’t beg But I’ll fight like you fought and I’ll bleed like you bled ‘Till love lays me down in that old Jackson Hole Love lays me down in that old Jackson Hole
